The Hoberman Sphere is a transforming globe. This great one makes a kinetic mobile. The sphere is also a learning tool as it combines math, science, and esthetics. Based on a math principle that allows a structure to mechanically expand while keeping its shape Its magical motion combines simplicity, beauty and fun. This system of polymer links transforms from 9-1/2 inches to 30 inches or 3 times in size. There is a game sheet and educational booklet included, and is available in an assortment of colors. These spheres can hang as a mobile. There are also "glow in the dark" styles. This product was pictured at the onset of the chapter "Toys of the Future" in my book "Toys for a Lifetime" (FAO Schwarz/Rizzoli) but unfortunately, the Hoberman sphere in the photograph was not identified in the credits. I am pleased to identify this fabulous toy now.

Brief History of Hoberman

Since 1990, Hoberman Associates have provided design and planning for architectural concepts and construction for exhibits, museums and spaces. Structures include a retractable dome at the Expo 2000 in Hanover, Germany, and other spheres in New York, Japan, Chile and France. Chuck and Carol Hoberman realized that toys could be developed from the structures he made. The unfolding structures combine geometry and science with art. The original toy was the sphere. There were additional ones after that both for indoor and outdoor use. It has been used in all sorts of settings from movies to being seen in the hands of former U.S. President Bill Clinton. The Expandagon construction system has been in the line since 2000. There is a flight ring that can be expanded, snapped and then flies. The Hoberman arch-a web-like structure made of aluminum backed with glass took center stage at the Olympic Metals Plaza.
