This is a very well designed cookbook for children. Illustrations are bright and the book is a delightful mix of recipes and information. There are menus for breakfast, lunch and dinner, plus snacks, desserts and so on mixed in, with plenty of ecological information, tips, history and stories. You can find a recipe for chicken stir-fry along with a food fact: the stir-fried method of cooking originated long ago in China during long periods of fuel shortages, in order to cook a meal using the least amount of timber for a cooking fire. For this same reason, Chinese cooks spent a lot of time preparing ingredients in advance. Recipes with taco salad bowls go along with a story about the Carlsbad Caverns in the Guadalupe Mountains of southeast New Mexico. There is a whole section on kitchen crafts and experiments including bubbles, play dough, play clay, face paint, dog biscuits and making recycled paper. In addition to the recipe index there is a separate index for referencing notes, and a resource list of environmental organizations. Proceeds from this book help support the Nature Conservancy.
